#OpFacebook

Sometimes I’m misinformed… about many things. But when it comes about the “web world” I’m always behind on the news.

Two days ago, a friend told me about an organization, Anonymous, which announced, through a video, that they plan to hack Facebook because the social network “sells information to government agencies”. If you belong to the super normal and responsible people who reads all the internet agreements before clicking “I agree” (not like me…), you might know that:

For content that is covered by intellectual property rights, like photos and videos (IP content), you specifically give us the following permission, subject to your privacy and application settings: you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook (IP License). This IP License ends when you delete your IP content or your account unless your content has been shared with others, and they have not deleted it.

When you delete IP content, it is deleted in a manner similar to emptying the recycle bin on a computer. However, you understand that removed content may persist in backup copies for a reasonable period of time (but will not be available to others).

Straight from the Statement of Rights and Responsibilities from Facebook, updated on April 26 of this year, that I found clicking on Terms (down at the bottom of the site). What I just quoted means that FB will keep all your info during a “reasonable period of time”, whatever that means, no matter if you erase it. This is one of the reasons the group gave to start the called OpFacebook: destroy the web site on November 5th.

I read more about the subject and I found a twitter account and a blog that give info about the Anonymous operations. On the first one, I found this:

TO PRESS: MEDIAS OF THE WORLD... STOP LYING! #OpFacebook is just ANOTHER FAKE! WE DONT "KILL" THE MESSENGER. THAT'S NOT OUR STYLE #Anonymous. 9 ago vía web

Dont be silly. Important things are happening in the world to deal with quirks like #OpFacebook. Lets keep our style & moral #Anonymous. 10 ago vía web

#OpFacebook is being organised by some Anons. This does not necessarily mean that all of #Anonymous agrees with it. 10 ago vía web

We prefer to face the real power and not to face to the same medias that we use as tools. #OpFacebook #Anonymous. 10 ago vía web

I couldn’t find anything on the blog about the theme, but I must confess I didn’t read a lot. Since my point of view, the group doesn’t give much relevance to it, like if they weren’t related at all. I rather keep on thinking this, so I don’t get paranoid. =P

Anyway, we’ll see what happens on November 5. You never know.

If you want to know more about the Anonymous group, you can watch this video. I won’t embed it because the robotic voice makes me nervous =S

I’m going to keep enjoing of my first weekend of this 2012-1… happy for finally have it here.

Jessica...you are certainly "tech savvy" and quite knowledgable regarding online information. I'm with you as far as taking a "wait and see" approach until November.

Meanwhile, thanks for the "heads up" so we can be on guard about FB. Again, enjoyed your well-written post...keep it going!
